Which residence route fits your move?

Start with what you will actually do in Dubai. An employer-led move, overseas remote job, business, retirement and property purchase create different applications. Use the official route descriptions to shortlist an option, then ask the relevant authority to confirm your case.

• UAE employment: ask your employer which authority handles the work permit and residence, what they pay for, and when dependants can apply. Get medical insurance, school allowances, relocation costs and probation terms in writing.
• Virtual work: GDRFA describes a renewable one-year residence for remote work with an organisation outside the UAE. Its service requires evidence of that work and income of at least USD 3,500 a month, alongside insurance, medical fitness and identity documentation.
• Green residence: the government describes self-sponsored routes for eligible skilled workers and freelancers. Check the current category-specific qualification, permit, income and evidence requirements; a job title alone does not establish eligibility.
• Business or investment: owning or establishing a business has its own licensing and residence requirements. Confirm the proposed activity and operating permissions before paying a formation provider.
• Retirement: DLD describes a five-year property-based route for applicants aged 55 or over with qualifying property value of at least AED 1 million; mortgaged property requires additional paid-amount evidence. Other retirement routes have separate criteria.
• Property investor residence: review the separate DLD Taskeen service and the Golden Visa route. They are different applications; do not apply an old online threshold or one route’s rules to another.
• Study: confirm sponsorship and residence arrangements with the admitting institution, including what happens during a course change or after graduation.

Moving with a partner, children or parents

For the standard employee sponsorship route, the UAE Government currently states a minimum salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. Sponsored family members aged 18 or over need medical fitness screening. Salary is only one condition: relationships, age, accommodation and the sponsor’s status also matter.

Do not assume a parent, unmarried partner, adult child or domestic worker uses the same process as a spouse or young child. Ask for the exact category, evidence, insurance, deposit if applicable and duration for each person. Golden Visa dependant provisions are a separate check.

• Create one document list per person: passport, photograph, existing UAE status, relevant birth or marriage records and insurance.
• Check whether custody papers, the other parent’s consent, dependency evidence or translations are required for your circumstances.
• Plan who arrives first and where the rest of the family will stay while the sponsor completes their process.
• If a sponsored partner wants to work, have the employer verify the required work authorisation. Residence alone is not a substitute for the relevant employment permissions.

Prepare documents before leaving home

Ask the receiving authority for its precise checklist before ordering attestation or translation. MOFA attestation verifies document seals and signatures; it does not replace immigration approval. The route depends on the issuing authority and document type.

• Check passport validity against the selected entry and residence service; keep names and dates consistent across documents.
• Gather civil-status certificates, qualifications where required, employment or income evidence, school reports and vaccination records.
• Confirm the issuing-country and UAE attestation steps, accepted digital originals and any certified Arabic translation requirements.
• Keep originals accessible during travel and encrypted copies separately. Never send identity files through an ordinary property enquiry form.

From entry to Emirates ID: organise the dependencies

• Confirm your entry permission and approved application route before travelling. Keep the application reference and expiry dates.
• Agree whether an entry permit or an in-country status change is required; do not assume entering as a visitor completes residence formalities.
• Follow the authority’s sequence for medical fitness, Emirates ID application or biometrics, insurance and residence issuance. Requirements vary by category and age.
• Start dependant applications at the permitted point and check every issued name, date and passport number.
• Use issued documents to complete bank, tenancy and other registrations as requested by each provider. Keep temporary accommodation flexible until the key dependencies are confirmed.

Plan for renewal, job changes and travel

Keep reminders for passports, residence, Emirates ID and insurance separately. Before changing employer, cancelling a sponsor’s residence or spending an extended period abroad, ask how your own and your dependants’ status will be affected. Do not rely on one generic grace period across all visa categories.

A residence permit does not, by itself, settle tax residence or obligations in your previous country. Obtain advice on your departure, work arrangements, business interests and continuing overseas income.
